Withington and West Didsbury railway station is a former station in the southern suburbs of Manchester, England, United Kingdom. It opened in 1880 as Withington and Albert Park station when the Midland Railway opened its new Manchester South District line out of Manchester Central Station. The station was renamed Withington and West Didsbury in 1895.[1]
The Manchester South District line, and consequently Withington & West Didsbury station, closed in July 1961. The original cobbled station approach road and wall are visible off Lapwing Lane, and the remains of the station platform are also still visible down in the overgrown embankment.
West Didsbury Metrolink Station is a station proposed in Phase 3B of the Manchester Metrolink "Big Bang" extension plans.[2][3]
Located on the site of the old Withington & West Didsbury railway station, the stop will be east of Palatine Road & adjacent to Lapwing Lane, in the existing cutting. Passengers again will be able to travel by rail from West Didsbury for the first time since 1967. The new station is scheduled to open in the summer of 2013[4].
